Following demands from users for space-saving and energy-efficient UPS (uninterruptible power supply), APC, a UPS vendor, said Tuesday that UPS manufacturers are gearing towards manufacturing more transformer-less units, with APC paving the way for the market.
With the help of IGBT (Insulated-gate Bipolar Transistor) technology, APC said, new UPS units would eliminate the cumbersome and power-hogging transformer components. “Transformerless UPS units experience low disruption rates and have higher power factors, which help companies because it drains less power from the source,” explained Mangesh Wadhone, product manager for 3-phase power products, APC Asia Pacific and Japan.
By eliminating transformers, Wadhone said, companies are saving on physical and carbon footprint, as well as weight. This enables manufacturers to produce UPS units that can measure only 150 centimeters high and 8.54 centimeters thick, like the recently-launched APC Galaxy 3500.
But apart from producing space- and pollution-saving UPS products, APC said it is important to have the right management options and components in place. “Selecting the right components will enable companies to have more power that can be used for critical business units,” Wadhone noted.
Highly-efficient UPS systems that experience less power losses mean less power are going to power and cooling and more into the core business operations, Wadhone added. “Efficient UPS units need lower energy and therefore bring lower cost to firms,” he said.
Wadhone said efficient UPS systems are highly-important especially in this day and age when as much as $12 trillion are expected to be spent for energy in the next 20 years. “Humans created as much as 161 exabytes of data in 2006,” he shared. “And that is still expected to increase in the next several years. Inefficient products will only drive operating costs higher, and companies can’t afford to have downtimes because of them.”
