Notebook manufacturer Dell is refining its focus on the SMB market, with the release of its new Vostro 3000 line of laptops, specifically designed to address unique needs of the SMB segment.

With the new Vostro line, Dell executives said they are focusing on particular usage of notebooks, which can vary from structured, day-to-day tasks, to high performance computing, to casual browsing.

“The trend is changing. Now, there are different notebook needs,” related Tan Hiang, senior brand manager, South Asia solution marketing, Dell.

Hiang said Dell’s new Vostro offerings highlight commonplace SMB requirements, such as basic and essential computing, out-of-the-box functionalities, and lower price point.

The Vostro 3000 series now sport the latest Intel Core processors, with the Core i7 being available on the powerful Vostro 3700. The Vostro 3400, meanwhile, boasts a battery life of up to eight hours, for true portability and mobility, while the 13” Vostro 3300 claims to be among the thinnest in the industry.

Increasingly, Hiang added, design is becoming a deal-maker for SMBs. “Three years ago, design is not a priority for them. Now, more and more SMBs are looking to the design of their notebooks,” he explained.

With this in mind, Dell sharpened its focus on the design of their notebooks, according to Hiang. The vendor has now started its move from LCD screens to 100% LED displays, along with using aluminum instead of plastic enclosures.

Some models also sport an optional back-lit keyboard for computing in low-light environments, as well as a free-fall sensor for the hard disk drive—which parks the HDD head during swift motions—for optimum data protection.

Chris Papa, Dell Philippines’ country manager for SMB, said the new Vostro notebooks, coupled with Dell’s support expertise, make them perfect for businesses “who have minimal to no IT people,” a common pain point among SMBs.

Dell’s remote on-call support, the firm added, enables small businesses to get help when they need it using DellConnect, which allows tech support agents to troubleshoot and help resolve system issues remotely.

“One size definitely doesn’t fit all,” Hiang quipped. “Notebook usage is important, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses.”
