BORACAY, AKLAN – They’ve managed and secured your company’s data, now they want to preserve your country’s history.

On its tenth year of operations in the Philippines, information infrastructure vendor EMC made public its push to digitally preserve the country’s cultural artifacts, in a partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

The CCP, created by deposed Ferdinand Marcos in 1966 through Executive Order No. 30, aims to preserve Filipino arts and culture and promote the development and appreciation of national arts and culture.

It currently houses at least 40,000 hours of audio collection, 30,000 hours of tapes from its rich collection of films, 6,500 photos and 28,000 slides from its vast photographic collection, and at least 56,000 manuscripts of literary works.

The initiative by EMC will not only involve investments on machine and technology to digitally preserve the mountainous collection of CCP, but will include services and expertise as well, in a multi-phased project the vendor promises to see through until its end.

“As part of its tenth year of operation in the Philippines, EMC is leveraging its expertise in information infrastructure management to give back to the Philippine community by assisting CCP to digitally preserve and archive the national treasures residing at the center,” said Ronnie Latinazo, country manager of EMC Philippines.

Latinazo said the company has done several CSR (corporate social responsibility) projects during its 10-year stint in the country, “but we’ve really thought this one out because it is something close to our heart, of national relevance, and long-lasting.”

“We are deeply encouraged by EMC’s concern for our cultural heritage in its unwavering commitment to pursue this CSR with CCP’s digital library. It is reflective of EMC’s spirit and vision which point to a future where technology is a vital tool in nation-building,” remarked Eva Mari Salvador, department manager of Cultural Resource & Communication Services, CCP.

EMC is at a unique position to help address the digital preservation needs of the country’s prime culture hub, especially that it has amassed a wealth of solutions that hopes to efficiently manage any company’s information.

Most recently, EMC announced the availability of VPLEX, its technology offering which gives power to the concept of storage federation—or pooling of storage resources—and allow data to move within, across, and among data centers.

VPLEX, as well as EMC’s other solutions, hopes to address the enormous data boom that has been predicted by analysts to reach more than a zettabyte—or a figure with at 21 zeroes—by 2014.
