CHINA - Demands on mobile networks are increasing each day and Ericsson predicts that over three billion subscribers will use broadband by 2014. By this time, about 80% of the subscribers will use mobile broadband for smart phones, other devices as well as applications.
High capacity microwave radio connections help mobile operators to rapidly and cost-effectively backhaul broadband services on WCDMA and LTE networks especially in urban areas.
Support data speeds
To address this huge demand, Ericsson has designed the world’s fastest microwave backhaul solution with 2.5Gbps and will provide its live demonstration at GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona during 15-18 February.
Ericsson has decided to release its first product in the 70-80GHz frequency band supporting 1Gbps sometime this year.
This solution boasts a transporting capacity of 2.5Gbps and is part of Ericsson’s efforts to support increased data speeds in networks. The Swedish telecommunications giant also wants to ensure that data speeds can scale up to manage the capacity needed for fully fledged LTE systems.
E-band to transport data
By leveraging the new 70-80GHz frequency band (E-band), Ericsson’s latest solution can easily transport high levels of data on the air.
Microwave plays a critical role in fast and cost-effective rollouts of mobile networks according to Georges Antoun, head of IP and broadband at Ericsson. He said it will continue being important when the capacities take off in the networks.
Ericsson has now delivered over two million MINI-LINKs around the globe and Antoun said microwave will remain as the solution for mobile backhaul as it provides the lowest total cost of ownership.
