Samsung, Canon bag top nods in No.1 awards for sales

Global companies Samsung and Canon, both providers of electronic equipment and consumer gadgets, bested other product brands and was accorded the most number of awards at the recently held GfK No. 1 Awards at the Peninsula Manila Hotel in Makati City Friday.

Samsung and Canon each got three citations out of 15 awards that were given away, including No. 1 audio home system, LCD-TV, and standalone monitor for Samsung, and No.1 digital still camera, dSLR, and printer for Canon.

Other product brands accorded the distinction include: Sharp (washing machine and CRT-TV), Carrier (air-conditioniing), Sony (camcorder), Acer (mobile computer), Nokia (mobile phone), HP (multifunction printer), Apple (portable media player), and Panasonic (refrigerator).

“As the leading research house in retail technology, we have seen that companies must stay one step ahead of the sophisticated Generation Y consumers, who have higher expectations and are very demanding,” said Jake Savellano, country general manager, GfK. “Manufacturers must meet these requirements and offer more. We congratulate the number 1 brands for their great achievement especially with the constant challenge of holding a competitive position in the marketplace. We wish them all the best and look forward to many more innovative technologies from them.”

GfK, the market research firm that has for the past six years been handing out the awards to leading brands in the country, chose the awardees based which brands consistently garnered the top rank for unit sales in the market for the entire year.

Brands who won this year’s No. 1 awards have exclusive rights to display the No. 1 logo in their promotional materials and brand packaging from January to December 2010, according to Savellano.

GfK is a research company that tracks market pulse on consumer technology segments based on actual retail sales collected from retailers and outlet shops. It covers more than 55 product groups and over 350,000 models, collecting monthly data from over 6,000 specialist / independent shops as well as over 170 organized retailers with approximately 15,000 outlets.
