A Danish company which manufactures equipment used in harnessing wind power is opening its own IT hub in the Philippines, adding to its host of IT centers across the globe, company executives said Thursday.
Vestas Services Philippines Inc., which provided the famous wind turbines along the coasts of Ilocos Norte that provide 33 megawatts of power to thousands of households in the region, said the Philippines had the “best fit” into the global organization.
“We want our company to be more present in Asia,” said Torben Bonde, CIO and senior vice president, Vestas, among other reasons for choosing the Southeast Asian country to be the location of its new IT hub. “The Philippines gives us access to competencies and skills that we need.”
Vestas likewise operates separate IT hubs in Denmark, Singapore and the USA. The Philippine hub, once operations go full swing, will be its largest facility to date.
Vestas’s IT hub, located in Makati City, will initially house 25 IT professionals tackling surveillance, service desk, operations, support, and programming issues of the company worldwide. “We are looking at hiring heavily to expand our workforce to 100 employees by the end of this year,” Bonde said, adding that they are aiming at doubling that figure by end-2011.
But aside from leveraging local talents for its global operations, Vestas executives said their agenda in the region also includes spreading the benefits of renewable energy to locals.
The 6.6-billion euro sustainable energy proponent said the rising energy demand in the world is predicted to double by 2020. “Wind power is a renewable, predictable, and clean source of energy that countries can leverage to provide cheaper electricity to users,” explained Sean Sutton, president of Vestas Asia Pacific.
